Absolutely superb...
...though it does make one wonder why Lenny Kravitz, who penned most of the songs on this album, wasted some of his best material ever on Vanessa Paradis, a singer who had little chance of being heard outside of her native France. Vanessa's voice is high-pitched and a bit squeaky, though she was still a wee'un when this album was recorded ten years ago. If she wasn't still a teenager, she was barely into her 20s. If you can live with that and you like Lenny Kravitz, you'll love this.
Some of it is oddball 60s novelty, some of it is pure funk, and some of it is late 60s psychedelia, all with a 90s twist. The best tracks on the album by far are Paradis, The Future Song, and Natural High. If those don't hook you...well, you just don't like rock and roll.
A good pop album by Vanessa Paradis and Lenny Kravitz
Mostly written and produced by Lenny Kravitz. I don't usually like Kravitz's music. It seems he wants to be a very real rock artist and takes himself too seriously. But for this album he wrote some very light pop tunes and surprisingly they are much better than any of his other songs. Especially "Be My Baby" (which sounds like The Supremes and takes its title from a Ronettes/Phil Spector classic) and "Sunday Mondays" are almost perfect pop songs. There's also a pretty good cover version of "Waiting for the Man" by The Velvet Underground - it seems that Paradis likes Lou Reed's songs because there was "Walk on the Wild Side" on her second album. When I heard Vanessa Paradis's voice for the first time, I thought it was completely unlistenable. But soon I started to like it in some strange way. This is a very good pop album for people who don't take everything too seriously.
Beautiful Songs
I hear this Cd every single day. I heard about Vanessa about 5 months ago & I fell in love with her music. She's and overall OK singer. I know she's not Christina Aguilera but that's OK. This Cd is not 1 of her best Cd's (I think). But she does have great lyrics in this song. I liked this Cd because in the other Cd's that she's done she sounds diffrent and on this 1 it doesnt. That's what makes it so unique.
Amazing and Worth It!!!!
I am a teenager living in the USA and I don't speak one word of french. I became interested in Vanessa's music through my love for Johnny Depp ( they are NOT married, as a see another review has said, but they have been dating scince 1998 and have a daughter, Lily-Rose (5), and a son, Jack (about 2)). Anyway, the first time I heard the CD play I fell in love with it, and I would recommend this CD as the one to start out with if your like me and don't speak french. THis CD is absolutly incredible and I could not be more happy. My favorite songs are "silver and gold" and "paradis". It's so nice to hear wonderful music without profanity and offensive lyrics once in a while. FAns of Lenny Kravitz will also enjoy the music, and I also feel that if you like the band ABBA or anything similar, you will also enjoy this. The bottom line is, it is money well spent and you won't be disappointed.
Perfect!
This is my favourite one! She's really sexy with all her song inside...Great performed and amazing composed (Lenny Kravitz is da' best!) in every track. "Be My Baby" was so popular in Jakarta (1992) and it become hits at that time! I bought the record at Jogjakarta when I was in my holiday (1992). But now, it's hard to find this CD again after past 12 years..Anyone can help me to get this?
