Moon Safari Reviews

French ambience anyone?
The simplest ideas are indeed the best and 'Moon Safari' is something of a simple idea: Hitherto unknown French duo Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin get together in Paris and London and record cracking album of self-penned acoustic and synthesizer oriented, jazzy, ambient anthems and almost put Gallic music on the map. The album became an instant hit with critics and record buyers alike and is a perfect 'morning-after' record - particularly the stunning opener 'La Femme D'Argent'. It clocks in at over seven minutes in length and is a neat summation of what is to come over the following nine tracks. The electric piano (played by Dunckel) and the bass (Godin) meander to excellent effect and help make 'La Femme D'Argent' a rainy day classic. The musicianship is excellent throughout and Dunckel and Godin are shrewd in their combination of acoustic guitars and pianos and synthesizers - 'All I Need' being an excellent example. The aforementioned also features Beth Hirsch who gives a beautifully sensitive and unintrusive turn on vocals. She reappears on the later track 'You Make It Easy' which introduces some actually French sounding music to proceedings with the string and harmonica break in the middle. The following track 'Ce Matin La' carries on the theme of Gallic melancholia with beautiful results and soon becomes one of the best tracks on the album with the mellow tuba part achieving the greatest sound here. One suspects that Air will be here to stay for a while following the success of such an assured and strident debut recording - indeed the boys Dunckel and Godin have been busy fellows since 1998 writing soundtracks etc. - but can any future recording from them match the joyous warmth and mellow vibes exhibited in 'Moon Safari'?

Moon Safari is one of my favorite electronic albums!
Moon Safari, released in 1998, caused quite an impression worldwide. While previous French electronic albums, like Laurent Garnier's 30 or Daft Punk's Homework were hard-hitting, dancefloor oriented techno, Air's Moon Safari was much more aimed at the headset (or the conversation). It opens with the particulary impressive La Femme d'Argent, a 7-minute jazzy instrumental which sets a dreamy moonscape ambience that goes on through the album. Unfortunately, the album doesn't contain another jazzy instrumental like the great opener, however, this by no means is a bad thing. After La Femme d'Argent, the album continues with Sexy Boy, All I Need and Kelly, Watch The Stars!, three catchy songs which employ talkbox effects, and, oddly enough, it works! Talisman is another instrumental, but it is in a more 'dramatic' vein than La Femme D'Argent. Remember continues the style of the first three vocal tracks, but You Make It Easy is more, um, let's say 'balladish' although it isn't. Ce Matin La is another vocal-less track, and, again, it has a Talisman-like feel. The last vocal track is New Star in the Sky (Chanson pour SOLAL), which combines the style of both the first four tracks and the 'balladish' tones of You Make It Easy. La Voyage de Penelope closes the album instrumentally.
I just love this album because it sounds like a soundtrack to a movie, and it brings images of me in urban scapes with certain people to my mind, as well as other funny moon-related things, like a girl jumping in the moon... I love it!

Amazing!
Moon Safari is simply amazing! I bought this CD about one year ago, and it is still one of my favorites. It's the type of album you can put on repeat, and never get tired of it. Air's "Moon Safari" offers an eclectic mix of songs that are completely different from one another, but flow well nicely from track to track. Listen to it just for the sake of listening to it, play it at a party - this is versatile. My friends gave it a listen, and they (all with many different musical tastes, might I add) all loved it. "Moon Safari" remains classic and modern at the same time. Completely mellow, with substance.

ISO more like this!
This is my first ambient/techno music cd. I'd heard 'All I Need' on satellite several years ago and was hooked right away, but never bothered to look up the cd until now. I love the instrumental - especially the first track. Wish I could find more of the same - I'm not into the trip-hop side of this genre I'm finding so any recommendations greatly appreciated.

One of the best of 1998
I remember this was like the album of the year in 1998. Everyone was playing it nonstop. I was at a new year's eve party at the end of 1998 and someone put this album on and it was great. I was on some E and hanging out in Brooklyn. I went into the city and hung out at a few parties. I will always remember that night. The music of Air plays a big part in this.
French duo Air's debut album is a superlatively happy collection of experimental disco-mood sound nestled between ambient soundscape and breathy pop. It's jazzy and melodic, and mostly laid-back, but not excessively so. There are a few shake-it, shake-it numbers, too, like the absurdly daft hit "Sexy Boy." It's snap your fingers and hang out (while reading) music or dance around sexy-slow with your mate music. It's also the perfect music to do your ironing or some other chore to; it's hypnotizing wallpaper music. It slips in and out of your consciousness, forcing you to move around with a relaxed smile before you even realize it. Oh, and contrary to sampler fashion, Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel played the instruments themselves. Bravo. --Mike McGonigal
