Escape Reviews

Journey's Most Consistent...
I remember being in the 4th grade and riding the school bus with a friend of mine who, for some reason, had the LP of this with him. I loved the futuristic cover and when I heard the music tucked inside the vinyl grooves...I've always separated Journey albums into 3 categories(excluding "Arrival" with Steve Augeri, which is one of their finest records):1)Pre-Steve Perry, progressive jazz-rock music 2)Classic, stadium-rock & 3)Top 40, smooth R&B schlock. This record was a culmination of all of those(although not as much schlock) and I think it was Journey's most consistent album. I don't know if it was the addition of Jonathan Cain but the songwriting went up several notches. No less than 5 of these songs can be heard on classic rock radio every day. The production is crisp and clear, unlike earlier Journey albums which sound a bit dated now. Neal Schon found his sound and sealed his guitar hero status. (Not that he wasn't capable before this.) If you only buy one album from Journey, excluding their Greatest Hits, this is quite possibly their finest record.

Underrated Prog. Rock
It seems that Journey is often dismissed as a lame 80's pop rock band, but they were much more than that. They were actually closer in spirit to oldschool progressive rock, like Yes or Kansas. There was a little of that "80's sound" in there, but the progressive aspect is undeniable. Listen to Neal Schonn rip into those amazing solos, and see if you can still tell me this is simple pop rock. "Don't Stop Believin" and "Open Arms" are great mainstream tracks, but this album has more to offer than just those. The title track and "Keep on Runnin" are good, energetic hard rockers, and "Who's Cryin Now" has a very jazzy feel. I don't care much for "Still They Ride". A ballad about the James Gang was kind of odd, I think it should have been a faster track. But all in all, this is good stuff. It's a bit mainstream, but the talent is definitely there. These guys played very tight, and all the musicians were good at what they did. Oh yeah, and Steve Perry is a great voacalist, much better than the newer guy. If you like this, I would recommend albums from Queensryche, Dream Theater, and Transatlantic, so you can kind of see the "evolution" of progressive rock. This album's not really essential, but I'd say it's probably Journey's best, and an enjoyable listen for any prog. rock fan.

Journey - Escape
This is one of my alltime favorite Journey albums! A flick of the switch and I am back in Jr. High going to the arcade with my friends and roller skating. A classic transport in time by one of the greatest rock and roll bands of the 80's. One that is good enough to translate easily to the youth of today as great music.

Escape Is One of All Time Greatest Rock Albums
There have been many great reviews of this album posted already, and I can't really add more than they have. That said, I regard this album as one of the top 10 greatest albums ever recorded. Every song on this CD is remarkable. After 20+ years, listening to this CD still gives me goosebumps.

Journey: The Rock and Roll Gods!!
This is by far one of the best compilations ever heard. A perfect album for a perfect band. Steve Perry never falls short of making a heartrending touching song. Not One bad song on this CD. Hurry go out and get this CD!!!
